THE HISTORY OF BLACK WALL ST : IN HONOR OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH

At the turn of the 20th century, African Americans founded and developed the Greenwood district in Tulsa, Oklahoma AKA "BLACK WALL STREET. It was the golden door of the Black community during the early 1900s, and it proved that African Americans had successful infrastructure. That's what Black Wallstreet was all about.

The dollar circulated 36 to 100 times, sometimes taking a year for currency to leave the community. Nowadays THE BLACK DOLLAR leaves the Black community within 15-minutes . During that era, physicians owned medical schools. There were shops everywhere, Hotels , Jewelry stores, 21 churches, 21 restaurants and two movie theaters. It was a time when the entire state of Oklahoma had only two airports, yet six Blacks owned their own planes. It was a very fascinating community.

BLACK WALL STREET was a safe place for African Americans to settle, between 1865 and 1920 a. the community grew and flourished as a Black economic and cultural mecca—until May 31, 1921. Unfortunately On May 31, 1921, a white mob descended on Greenwood, destroying 1,000 homes and multiple businesses, displacing most of the district’s 10,000 residents. A reported 300 Black residents were killed. That's when a white mob began a rampage through some 35 square blocks, decimating the community known proudly as "Black Wall Street." Armed rioters, many deputized by local police, looted and burned down businesses, homes, schools, churches, a hospital, hotel, public library, newspaper offices and more. While the official death toll of the Tulsa race massacre was 36, historians estimate it may have been as high as 300. As many as 10,000 people were left homeless.

WE DEDICATE THIS EVENT TO THE VICTIMS AND TO THE LEGACY OF BLACK WALL STREET. LETS COME TOGETHER TO THE BLACK WALL ST EXPO @ THE KENNEDY CENTER TO UPLIFT AND PATRONIZE OUR LOCAL BLACK BUSINESS OWNERS <3
