  1. Granville T. Woods – Woods invented improvements to the electrical telegraph and telephone systems. He received several patents for his inventions, including a system for transmitting electrical power and signals, which was a precursor to the modern subway system.

  2. Lewis Howard Latimer – Latimer patented an improved method for manufacturing the carbon filaments used in light bulbs. This made the production of light bulbs much more efficient and allowed for the widespread use of electricity.

  3. Garrett A. Morgan – Morgan invented the gas mask and the first traffic signal. His gas mask was used during World War I and is considered an early version of the modern gas mask. His traffic signal helped to regulate the flow of traffic in busy urban areas.

  4. Elijah McCoy – McCoy invented automatic lubrication systems for trains and machines. This greatly improved the efficiency and longevity of machines, and his inventions are still in use today.

  5. Augustus Jackson – Jackson developed new methods for making ice cream and other food items. He was known for his innovative recipes and is credited with helping to popularize ice cream in the United States.

  6. Henry Blair – Blair was the first African American to receive a patent for an agricultural tool. His invention, a seed planter, greatly improved the efficiency of planting crops.

  7. Benjamin Banneker – Banneker was a self-taught astronomer, mathematician, and inventor who built the first all-wooden clock in the US. He was also a prominent abolitionist and used his skills to support the anti-slavery movement.

  8. Marie Van Brittan Brown – Brown invented a home security system with remote viewing capabilities. Her invention is considered one of the earliest versions of the modern home security system and greatly improved home safety.

  9. George Washington Carver – Carver was an agricultural scientist and inventor who developed hundreds of products from peanuts and sweet potatoes. His work helped to improve the lives of farmers and greatly impacted the agricultural industry.

  10. Nathaniel Alexander – Alexander invented a folding chair-bed that could be easily stored. This was a valuable invention for people who lived in small spaces, as it allowed them to have a comfortable place to sleep without taking up too much room.
